History of the MorganPierpont Morgan - One of the great financiers of turn-of-the-century America, Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) began to assemble a collection of artistic objects in 1890 to rival the holdings of Europe's renowned libraries. Within a decade, his collections required a building of their own. Morgan's original library, on 30th Street, between Madison and Park avenues, was completed in 1906 by the noted architect Charles McKim as a Renaissance-style palazzo of formal elegance and understated grandeur. In 1924 J.P. Morgan, Jr. transformed the library into a public institution as a memorial to his father. As the collections grew, he also added an annex adjacent to the original building to serve as both a library and a museum. In 1988 his mid-ninetennth-century brownstone facing Madison Avenue was also added to the complex. |
